First Impressions and Build Quality

Let’s jump into our latest tactical gear review. Right out of the box, the build quality of this mag holder impressed us quite a bit. For being “amazon tactical gear” it feels solid and durable. The design is clean and minimalist, offering a no-frills, functional approach that leans on the side of durability. Constructed from rigid and Kydex, the material feels solid. Kydex is known for its strength, being used for other duty gear like holsters, flashlight holders and sheaths.
We liked the first one so much we ended up buying another. With the eventual build of our battle belt set up, we don’t use these as often. These still get use when they are lent out to buddies at the range. They also get used for minimal range setups, dry fire training, and low profile outings.

KYDEX – OWB Magazine Pouch

Ambidextrous. Designed for standard AR magazines. Fits all aluminum, steel and polymer style rifle magazines.

The pouch fits standard AR-style magazines, including aluminum, steel, and polymer varieties. We tested it with a mix of polymer magazines, including Magpul P-MAGs and HexMags, and found the fit consistently snug and secure. We did not notice the magazines rattle or shift, during usage at the range. It is an absolute MUST to thread locker the screws after you get retention just right. Nearly all of the negative reviews we read on Amazon mention the screws coming loose and getting lost.

Ambidextrous Design

One of the standout features of this mag carrier is its ambidextrous design. The belt clip can be mounted on either side of the mag holder, however either way the mag holder is pointed still seems to work fine with the magazine inserted. In the picture above, you can see the 6 screw holes. The clasp can mount to these holes if you wanted it to be on your right-hand side.

Adjustability

The adjustable retention sets this apart from the 100 other cheaply made mag holders on amazon. Using the built-in inserts, you can fit this mag holder to the most common belt sizes. The belt attachment accommodates belts ranging from 1 to 2 inches wide. Whether you’re running a slim leather belt for casual wear or a heavy-duty tactical belt, this pouch adapts with ease. The belt clip secures firmly, ensuring the pouch stays put throughout a day of movement and shooting drills. Adjusting the retention is a quick and intuitive process, and once set, it stays consistent even during use.

Performance on the Range

We’ve taken this magazine pouch on several “laid-back” range trips, and it’s quickly proven itself as a worthy accessory on our “non battle belt” setup. The slim profile ensures it doesn’t feel bulky, even when paired with other gear.

During reload drills, the pouch stayed in place when grabbing and pulling the mags out. . Magazines come out smoothly without excessive effort, but they’re held firmly enough to prevent them from falling out during running or movements during drills.

Durability and Value

After a few months of use, the magazine pouch still looks and functions like new. I’ve used it in various conditions, from sunny afternoons to light rain, and it’s held up flawlessly. One thing we do want to mention is that when setting this up for the first time we highly recommend the screws be fastened with blue loctite thread locker. This ensures that the screws do not back out and get lost while this is mounted. If we learned anything from the amazon reviews it is that these screws like to back out and get lost. After putting the loctite on and allowing them to dry 24 hours at least, we recommend you put witness marks with a paint pen on the screws so you can tell if they are backing out.

The price point feels fair given the durability and performance this mag holder offers. It’s the kind of gear you buy and abuse and if it breaks you don’t stress about it too much because it was so cheap. We still plan to put this through it’s paces and even stress test it. At this time we wouldn’t rate this “Duty Kit” worthy, there are much better candidates for that. However for $20 bucks, it’s worth it for some casual range trips or even to lend to a friend who isn’t as much of a “gearhead” while out doing drills.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for an affordable yet versatile magazine pouch to enhance your range setup, this magazine pouch is an excellent choice. Its combination of durability, adjustability, and ease of use makes it a “Buy” in our book. This is one of the best best budget tactical gear items we’ve bought in a while. This mag holder is a good addition to anyone’s range tactical gear collection.
